About

Stacks of stainless steel bowls and cups on a tray against a tiled kitchen wall

Restaurant Option is a practical blog about the small end of the food business: food trucks, home bakers, pop-up dinners, farmers market stalls, small cafés and the side hustles that sometimes grow into one of them. We write for people who are about to start, have just started, or are trying to work out whether an idea is worth the effort.

What we cover

Most of what we publish falls into five areas. Getting Started covers the first decisions: business plans, licenses and permits, and training. Food Trucks looks at mobile operations, commissaries and permits. Home Bakers covers cottage food rules, labeling and selling from home. Pop-Ups & Markets deals with temporary events, stalls and festivals. Small Cafés covers premises, equipment and day-to-day running. Our Lifestyle and Leisure & Games sections look at life around the work, from balancing a side business with a day job to catering for game days and events.

How we choose topics

We start from the questions people actually face when they set up or run a small food business: what permit do I need, what does the label have to say, how do I set up a booth that passes inspection. We prefer specific, practical guidance over general encouragement, and we avoid recommending particular shops, brands or suppliers.

How we check facts

Rules for food businesses come from governments, and they vary between countries, states, counties and cities. When we state a rule, a deadline, a temperature or a requirement, it comes from an official or authoritative source we have read, such as a federal agency, a state or county health department, or a national food safety body, and we link to it so you can read it yourself. Where rules differ by location, we say so and point you to the authority that decides. We do not invent statistics, people, businesses or quotes. If we cannot confirm something, we leave it out.

Nothing on this site is legal, tax or financial advice. Always confirm the rules that apply to you with your local authority before you act.
